The town has great strengths – its strategic location in the UK and London, its large reservoir and pipeline of industrial floorspace, its national and international reputation as a magnet for South Asian culture, fashion, film and food and the untapped space to grow.
Significant new developments of new homes are completed near Southall Station taking advantage of the new Elizabeth Line station and more underway with a new commercial neighbourhood to complement the existing town centre and a brand-new park.
However, there remains much potential to bring ‘good jobs’ to the area to make the local economy more diverse and resilient and better capitalise on its proximity to Heathrow, the A312 and enhancing it as a destination for the South Asian food, fashion and retail.
Along with Ealing Council, the Mayor of London recognises the potential of Southall as a key area for investment and growth in London. The London Plan identifies a potential for 9,000 new homes and 3,000 new jobs here by 2041.
About 70% of available commercial floorspace is industrial with many of London’s key industrial estates in Southall and it is home to nearly 400 businesses, providing over 4,000 jobs.
Heathrow is a major employer with almost 3,000 Southall residents working at the airport and many international food manufacturers such as Noon Products, Delifrance are based here. As a key area for ongoing growth and investment, the council published its ‘Southall Reset Programme’, to bring greater certainty on its expectations from current developers and future investors on how they can support the thriving community of existing residents and businesses and capitalise further on unlocking the potential of Southall huge areas of brownfield land and industrial areas.
However, there are challenges, so the council wants investors who will take on the challenges of helping us reduce that through a creative and innovative approach to investment, and who will be proud to become long term custodians of Southall.
Southall station is served by main line trains to Paddington and west to the Thames corridor.
